“Indications show that the last ship that was bombed belonged to Colombia and there were Colombians on board,” said Petro at X.
His post on X echoed US senator Adam Schiff, who said he would vote to block attacks on ships in the Caribbean.
In the upload, Petro also hopes that the families of the affected victims can report to the authorities in Colombia.
He then emphasized that the actions of the US government under Donald Trump triggered a war in the Caribbean.
“There is no war against smuggling, there is a war against oil and the world must stop that,” said Petro.
The Colombian president later said, “This aggression is directed against all of Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Responding to this claim, a White House official called Petro’s statement baseless and reprehensible.
“The United States hopes that President Petro will publicly retract these baseless and reprehensible statements, so that we can return to productive dialogue to build a strong and prosperous future for the people of the United States and Colombia,” he told Reuters.
The official went on to say Colombia is an important strategic partner for the US despite policy differences.
The two countries, he continued, also have the same priorities, including regional security.
The US Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not yet commented on Petro’s statement.
Last weekend, the US government under Donald Trump fired on ships off the coast of Venezuela in a series of attacks on vessels deemed suspicious.
The US also bombarded Venezuelan ships suspected of carrying drugs. As a result of the attack, 21 people were reported killed.
