“Defendant’s deployment of federalized troops to Illinois was clearly unlawful,” the lawsuit states.
“Plaintiffs ask the court to stop the illegal, dangerous, and unconstitutional federalization of members of the United States National Guard, including Illinois and Texas National Guard troops,” the lawsuit continues.
The lawsuit marks a new chapter in the legal battle between the Trump administration and states. In recent months, Trump has been sued over his decision to deploy troops to the state to protect federal assets.
The lawsuit filed by Chicago and Illinois itself was launched hours after a federal judge blocked a similar deployment in Portland, Oregon.
Several days ago, the White House announced that 300 members of the Illinois National Guard would be sent to Chicago to protect federal assets and officials.
The news of this deployment was criticized by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who rejected the plan because it was considered an “invasion”.
The White House has responded to Pritzker’s denials.White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the agency would not remain silent on the “lawlessness plaguing America’s cities.”
Since taking office, Trump has stepped up his efforts to eradicate illegal immigrants in the United States. This step was strongly protested by US citizens, especially migrants, resulting in clashes between ICE immigration officers and the public.
One of the clashes occurred in Los Angeles. After the clashes, Trump deployed National Guard troops to quell protests and secure ICE operations.
National Guard troops continue to be Trump’s weapon in securing order and immigration operations.
